Tenute Sella was founded in 1671, when Comino Sella bought his first vineyard in Lessona, even then a highly suited place for the production of fine red wines. At the end of the 18 hundreds, the family decided to extend their estate and bought more vineyards in Bramaterra. Today Sella produces about 80 thousand bottles of the finest Piedmont DOC wines, a small part of which goes under the "reserve" lable and is only used for quality tests and for the needs of the family.
Particularly rare wines are stored in the family cellars and are not for sale. One of their oldest bottles dates back to the end of the 19th century.
The Sella vines cultivation is conventional, but respectful of the environment and of the ecosystem. The soil is sandy, with a high concentration of minerals, so the roots of the plants have to grow deep to find enough moist. The best local grape varieties are Nebbiolo, Vespolina, Croatina and Erbaluce, all typical of the Biella area, and produce concentrated and rich wines.
