The Hugues Godmé family has been growing vines inVerzenay, a commune of the La Marne départment, for five generations. They own 11 hectares of land divided in 80 sections over four villages in Northern Montagne de Reims. Almost half of the Godmé vineyards are Chardonnay, 30% are Pinot Noir (certified Grand Cru) and the remaining 20%, planted over the La Marne valley, are Pinot Meunier.
For the Godmé company, the work done directly at the vineyards is particularly important as, in the owners' opinion, this reflects on the quality of the final product in your goblet. “When I look at the way the grapes grow on the hill slope, I can say in advance what the wine is going to taste like”.
Godmé only uses organic farming methods and his grapes grow noticeably better than the neighbours'. There are objective reasons to this: when the roots of the vine are deeper, they grow more concentrated, bear more acidity and produce a particularly mineral taste.
The Domaine Godmé is certified organic since 2013. Most of the harvested grapes are aged in enamel cisterns and do not undergo malolactic fermentation. All grapes from the various sections of the vineyard are fermented separately or in small groups with similar terroirs. 40% of the production is then aged in oak barrels and, in the future, this percentage is going to grow.
The Godmé Champagne is not filtered and the Domaine Godmé is one of the few, over the Northern Montagne de Reims, able to infuse such deep taste and character to the Verzenay Champagne. Fact: 11 HA, Verzenay, Reims, R.M. - 100,000 bottles per year.
