The history of the Pierre Usseglio winery started with Francis Usseglio who, in 1931, left his homeland town of Giaveno near Turin, in Italy, and moved to Chateauneuf du Pape, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. In 1948, he rented eight hectares of land and started producing his own wine. In 1966 his son Pierre, also a vintner, became the founder and owner of the Domaine Pierre Usseglio.
Jean-Pierre and Thierry, members of the third Usseglio generation, took over the family business in 1999, modernised it and raised both the quality and production standards. The same year they inherited the eight hectares of vintage vineyard cultivated by their grandfather, which allowed them to produce a better and greater variety of wines, and to create something new.
Today, the Pierre Usseglio company owns 24 hectares of land, divided into 17 lots with different types of soil. Most of their vines are 60 years old, while some are 30 years old. The harvesting is manual and the selection very accurate. Starting from 2001 all the red varieties are not watered; the standard cuvee grapes grow on sandy soil covered in small pebbles. The fermentation and maturation process takes around 20 days. The company mainly produces a traditional red Chateauneuf du Pape.
